Rare near NOS Large 15/16 Iwasaki Tamahagane kamisori “Forged Separately” by Shigeyoshi Iwasaki

Rare Japanese kamisori forged from Tamahagane by Iwasaki Shigeyoshi.

 With a 15/16 wide and 59mm long blade, this is one of the largest Iwasaki Tamahagane kamisori ever made. 

 The stamp “別打” on the blade and on the box, translates as “Forged Separately”. 

 The writing in the box translate “Made by Shigeyoshi Iwasaki” and under is his original name stamp. 

  It was bought new many years ago, shaved once or twice with the original factory edge and stored in a drawer afterwards. 

Tamahagane or “The Jewel Steel” is known worldwide to be the most pure Japanese steel and to be produced with a very complex process.
This precious steel was used only for the best samurai swords and there are many legends regarding the extreme sharpness and edge retention of the blades forged with Tamahagane steel.

Iwasaki’s Tamahagane steel production ended in the 70`s and very few razors made with this steel can be found in excellent condition these days
The characters stamped on the blade represents the name of the maker (岩崎) Iwasaki and the material used (玉鋼) Tamahagane.

Tip:
 For kamisori I recommend a paddle strop. If you don’t have one, always strop carefully the kamisori on the well stretched leather without pressure and be careful at the pointy corners!
Even skilled barbers can cut the leather strop with a kamisori!
